On the Glenn Highway between Anchorage and the MatSu Valley lies a hidden gem for those looking to see the beauty of Alaska – Eklutna Lake. This easily accessible location offers multiple recreation activities and some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll see in our great state.
The Eklutna Lake exit is located at mile 26.5 of the Glenn Highway heading north out of Anchorage. Once off the highway, it’s another 22 miles back to the campground and lake. The road is fairly smooth, but with some twists and turns as your elevation rises with the entrance into Chugach State Park. You will be driving near the Eklutna River, through the forest, and possibly past wildlife to arrive at the stunning blue of this glacial mountain lake.
Eklutna Lake campground has 50 campsites available for both tent and RV campers. The cost is $15 per night, with a 15 night maximum. If you only want to visit for the day, the parking lot rate is $5 per vehicle. The campground features latrines, water, picnic tables and fire pits. For the more adventurous, there are 2 state park cabins located along the hiking trail that can be reserved.
This ADA accessible recreation area has outdoor opportunities suitable for the whole family. Hiking and biking are allowed 7 days a week on the lakeside trail. The trail is 12.9 miles and goes the moraines of Eklutna Glacier. ATVs are allowed on this trail Sunday through Wednesday. You can even see people enjoying a horse trail ride along the lake. For more advanced hikers, there are the Twin Peaks trail and Bold Ridge trail which offer stunning views as a reward for climbing 3,600 feet.
Some visitors will participate in fishing and boating while at the lake. Be aware that the glacial fed water is extremely cold and deep (300 feet in some places). Exercise caution and bring life jackets.
Interpretive displays and a telescope for viewing wildlife and lake activities are located near the trail head parking area. There is a picnic shelter for group activities in the day use area. A large group picnic and camping area may be reserved by calling the Chugach State Park Headquarters at (907) 345-5014.
