Traveling north out of Anchorage, you can reach the 135-mile stretch of road running parallel to valleys carved out by the slowly receding wall of ice and snow known as the Matanuska Glacier.  This spectacular panorama of Alaskan beauty offers some of the most accessible glacier viewing in the state and is an outstanding drive for both visitors and residents.

The Glenn Highway will take you from Anchorage to Eureka, passing through the communities of Eagle River, Chugiak, Palmer, Sutton, Chickaloon, and Eureka.  Each section offers its own scenic vistas and activities for the whole family.  There are opportunities to enjoy geocaching, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, or even walking on a glacier.

Sutton

The eclectic little village of Sutton (population of 300) is located about an hour’s drive from Anchorage at Mile 60.  The visitors area has food and fuel, and this is where you can turn off the highway on to Jonesville Mine Road.  When you reach the sites of the old Eska and Jonesville mines that offer great opportunities for fossil hunting.  The Sutton Post Office, located at Mile 62, is an historic site build in the 1940s.

Chickaloon

Fifteen miles further north you’ll come upon the area known as Chickaloon.  The community has be home to the Athabascan Indians for centuries and the local tribal council has sought to preserve the traditions and language of its people.  Here you can book a white water rafting adventure at Lion’s Head or stop by the King Mountain recreation site.  If you want to try your hand at recreational gold panning, Caribou Creek can offer you a chance to hit the mother lode.

Eureka

Eureka and Sheep Mountain are fantastic places to spot wildlife.  Bring your binoculars because there’s a great chance to see sheep along the mountains as well as fox or bear.  At Mile 128, take a break at the historic Eureka Roadhouse for a meal and a chance to plan your stops on the return trip to Anchorage.
