The Glenn Highway north of Palmer offers many fun spots to stop in your RV – Matanuska Glacier, Sheep Mountain, and Eureka. But a little further on you’ll hit one of the best areas for outdoor recreation in Alaska. Lake Louise offers fun for the whole family.
This lake began its recreation history as a location for the soldiers of the US Army building the Glenn Highway during World War II. After the war, it went through a brief time of homesteading but eventually returned to an outdoor playground for Alaskans and visitors. The Lake Louise road begins at mile 159.8 of the Glenn Highway. The 19 miles of road takes you past spectacular views of Tazlina Glacier and mountains before coming to an end at the clear waters of the lake.
The 90-acre state recreation area includes the 37 square miles of Lake Louise and adjoining Susitna Lake, and represents the largest lake system in Alaska with road access. There are 52 camping sites along with a picnic area and shelters. Visitors can also access lodges, restaurants, a service station, and other businesses that can provide most services needed even in the winter.
If fishing is what you’re looking for, Lake Louise has it. There is great year-round fishing for four species: lake trout, whitefish, burbot and arctic grayling. The lake trout run from 8 to 12 pounds, but 20 pounders are not uncommon. Make sure to check the current South Central fishing regulations before gearing up.
Wildlife viewing is also a popular past time in the Lake Louise area. In the fall the Nelchina caribou herd passes through this area, and Bird Island in the lake is the only known recorded freshwater nesting site for cormorants. You can also see gulls, trumpeter swans, and loons at different times during the year. Visitors may also catch sight of moose, wolf, bear, and fox during a stay at the lake.
Other recreation opportunities abound in the area. There are hiking trails and a public boat launch on the lake. Berry picking is a fun family activity in late summer. There is even a small beach for those travelers brave enough to take a quick dip in the chilly waters.
If you’re group is looking for a fun outing in an out-of-the-way spot, Lake Louise has a little bit of something to make everyone happy. Pick up your ABC Motorhome RV and hit the Glenn Highway to see the best Alaska has to offer.
