The Best Way to See Alaska

How to Spend Your Day in Anchorage

After picking up your Motorhome from ABC, you might not be quite ready to hit the road. Anchorage offers some fun ways to add extra memories to your Alaskan adventure trip. We have some ideas of how to spend that first day in town.

 The Alaska Zoo

One of the top things visitors want out of a trip to Alaska is wildlife sightings. The Alaska Zoo offers you a chance to see those animals in a beautiful urban forest setting. There are the usual Alaskan biggies including moose and polar bears mixed with the more exotic snow leopard and Siberian tiger. The best time to visit is morning before the tempartures get too warm for some of the animals.

Anchorage Museum

The Anchorage Museum features world class exhibits of native Alaskan art and artifacts, some from the Smithsonian. There are displays about the history of Alaska and great displays of local artists. For the kids, the Imaginarium section of the museum offers hands on science displays (that are pretty fun for the adults too). The gift shop has a wonderful selection of local art to bring home to friends and family.

Alaska Native Heritage Center

On the way out of Anchorage heading north, is the Alaska Native Heritage Center. The park features displays showing examples of houses and artifacts from the different native Alaskan cultures. It's located in a lovely wooded location where guests are free to walk around and experience the different areas.

Other Ideas

Some other ideas include:

  • Anchorage City History Trolley Tours - a red trolley giving narrated tours of downtown Anchorage.
  • The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail - one of the best walking and biking trails in the Anchorage area that follows the water and gives spectacular views of downtown Anchorage.
  • Alaska Public Lands Office - this is a one-stop-shop for all information on public lands in Alaska including hiking trails, campgrounds, and parks.

When you pick up your RV at ABC, you'll also see that we have a vast array of information about things to do in Anchorage and beyond. Make sure to come see us soon.
